Spring 2006

"Hats Off to Quilting"

Saturday, March 18 at the Georgia Mountain Center, Gainesville, GA

Host Guilds: Gwinnett, Hall County

Speaker: Bonnie Lyn McCaffery.  Visit her site at: www.bonniemccaffery.com

I had a great time at the 2006 Spring Convention and so did everyone who attended it.  We were welcomed to Gainesville by Mayor Pro-Tem Robert Hamerick.  Hertha Hefner and her committee from the Hall County Quilt Guild and the Gwinnett Quilters Guild did a wonderful job of planning and hosting the convention for the Council.  Our "Hats are off" to them to a job very well done.  The Georgia Mountain Center was beautifully decorated with hats full of flowers and the box lunches were delicious.  Of course, the vendors had lots of goodies for all the quilters to buy.  Almost 200 members and guests enjoyed the day with lots of door prizes, good food, and wonderful fellowship.  The display of Blue Ribbon Quilts by the Museum Committee made the day perfect.  Bonnie Lyn McCaffery was a wonderful speaker.  I took two of the three classes she taught and was amazed at the work I was able to accomplish in them.  All class members were able to bring a show-and-tell to the convention to share with everyone.  Bonnie is a very good teacher and her lecture was entertaining.  She brought quilts for all of us to look at up close and personal.  Marilyn S. Fall 2005

Saturday, October 8 at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County, Newnan, GA

Host Guilds: Quilters of the Southern Crescent, West Georgia Quilters, Cherokee Rose - Douglas County, Cherokee Rose Quilt Guild of Thomaston, and Old Town Sharpsburg Piecemakers

Speaker: Barbara Dieges.  Visit her site at: www.bdieges.com

Walls lined with quilts and vendors with their wares, raffle quilts and baskets, party favors, fresh flowers, happy chatter and laughter filling the gallery and the auditorium, tasty treats, and a unique program add up to a memorable Fall 2005 GQC Convention.  Volunteers from the Quilters Guild of the Southern Crescent, Cherokee Rose Quilters of Douglas County, Cherokee Rose Quilt Guild of Thomaston, West Georgia Quilters Guild, and Old Towne Sharpsburg Piecemakers spent countless hours crafting the tidy totes that were both party favor and goody bag.  They spent a very rainy Friday afternoon hanging quilts, setting tables, and preparing the venue for our arrival.  GQC Physical Assets Chairs Jane and Glen Kingsley worked with The Pin Place on the new design of our collectible lapel pins.  Susan Fisher and the Museum Committee collected and catalogued a wonderful array of challenge quilts.  Our keynote speaker Barbara Dieges transported us back in time with her quilts and tales of a family's journey to and life on the prairie.  Thank you one and all!

Fall 2004

Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the Cartersville Civic Center, Cartersville, GA

Host Guilds: East Cobb Quilters, Etowah Valley Quilters, and Lavender Mountain Quilt Guilds

Speaker:  Mary Sorensen.  Visit her site at: www.maryappliques.com

Fall Convention in Cartersville was indeed a Cornucopia of Quilts! Thanks to the considerable efforts of the host guilds, East Cobb, Etowah Valley and Lavender Mountain with assistance from Cherokee Rose of Douglasville, all directed by Convention Chair Nancy Hutchison, another successful Convention is in the books.

The decorations were charming, the food delicious, the wares in the vendors’ booth quite tempting and the goody bags were stuffed with ample treasures to delight any quilter. Those winning door prizes were even more delighted. Two lucky attendees left with especially big smiles as they took home the Raffle “Baskets”. Rosemary Grutt won the Museum’s raffle quilt.

Mary Sorensen’s presentation on combining appliqué and piecing was entertaining and informative which came as no surprise to those lucky enough to take a class from her in the days leading up to Convention.

A new tradition was launched with this Convention: mini quilt shows. This time the challenge quilts from East Cobb Quilters Guild and Etowah Valley Guild were displayed for all to enjoy. Thank you to the participating quilters for sharing your quilts. Plans are already being made for exhibitions at future Conventions including the Spring Convention on March 19, 2005 in Cumming featuring Nancy Odom.
